Mah Ha’Inyanim? Yesterday, I received troubling news from Hon. Fiamma Nirenstein’ office in Italy – the usual newsletter in Italian. She’s  unsettled and upset. She informs her public and her friends how she was portrayed in an anti-Semitic cartoon* — an ad hominem attack of the basest kind — (author publishes on a commie rag, of course!) some years back (2008). A journalist, whom I believe is also a politician, wrote some counter-sarcastic article in her defense (cannot find the article  to illustrate facts fully; but it balanced the hatred the cartoon offered, that’s easy to understand, without offering hatred back).

The author of the commie cartoon – vulgar, vitriolic and basely anti-Semitic – brought the journalist-politician to court for defamation. Defamation indeed! Hon. Nirenstein was supported at the time of the blatant defaming, anti-Semitic attack also by the Anti-Defamation League.

Lately, an Italian enlightened magistrate, to call it a court is to give too much status and importance, took a seemingly anti-Semitic stance [not impartial if we considers the unbalanced tit for tat*] and finally condemned the journalist-politician for defamation, while the blatant defamatory [ad hominem] anti-Semitic cartoonist can flout impunity to this day!

No outrage, no disgust from any side, or so it seems. I was unable to find any resonance of this episode in main papers – perhaps I don’t know how to search, since I don’t read the Italian press much; I find it  trashy and ignorant, filled with bias and fabricated reporting. If one does not accept their [press] dogmas blindly, one is an idiot, punishable with serious consequences or simply dismissed — a true enlightened road to dialogue and balanced sense of argumentation.

With this judgment, we have clear confirmation that there are two weights and two measures everywhere we look, in Italy and elsewhere: such is our world, and I don’t know where to begin to look for or demand factual truths. Even close friends (ex-close friends perhaps) refuse to listen to or analyze facts, and to open their eyes to reality.

The eternal question remains: who can benefit from the truth? Why is truth hard to face, particularly by totalitarian minded people and movements. If anyone has an answer, a balanced one, I’d love to have it, too

Lo scetticismo e l’alienazione vengono in parte, per il settarianismo all’interno dell’istituzione e lo spirito di protagonismo di coloro al timone; in parte, per la mancanza di coerenza verso i dettami del Cristo, dell’Antico e Nuovo Testamento, esibiti anche  e sempre ancora nell’odio e nella persecuzione degli ebrei. Questo senza ragione e senza causa, semplicemente per perversione e per l’ipocrisia sotto cui si nascondono verita’ scomode e oscene dei pupettari che manovrano i destini di noi cristiani.

Almeno, pero’, come cristiani abbiamo diritto di dire e scrivere cio’ che pensiamo sulla nostra chiesa e sulla nostra religione, senza incorrere in decapitazioni, censure e persecuzioni legali e non. Non e’ lo stesso se parliamo di culti e ideologie oscene, che la nostra chiesa istituzionale sostiene, non comprendendone l’implicazione, mentre continua a perseguitare e disprezzare gli ebrei per partito preso.
Non sono uno di questi cristiani che si e’ allontanato, ne’ uno di quelli ipocriti. Solo un essere umano fallibile e debole, con l’umilta’ di chiedere e dare perdono, e guardare al Cristo come al mio Redentore.

L’elemento umano che circonda il mondo della religione istituzionale onestamente fa specie, spesso e volentieri – le ultime notizie dalla diocesi californiana col prelato padre, ecc. – ma ho incontrato tanti uomini di chiesa integerrimi e probi che son stati d’esempio per me e per i miei figli e che hanno ispirato e sostenuto il mio cammino, da veri cristiani illuminati, che mai hanno scagliato la prima pietra, ma aiutando a risollevarmi. Vorrei sottolineare che sono divorziata, sì, lo so, anatema, e quindi scomunicata, ma vivere da cristiana implica molto più di dogmatismi e dogmi e di politiche di vario genere. Seguire l’etica e la morale, sfuggire e denunciare ipocrisie convenienti al dio denaro, fra le altre cose, non mi è stato impedito dal divorzio, anche se la chiesa-istituzione, nella sua secolare miopia, mi nega i sacramenti e probabilmente non mi considera più parte del consesso dei cristiani.

Continuo ad andare in chiesa, sono e mi sento cristiana, per pregare, per assistere alla Messa, o solo per riposare il mio spirito un po’ ammaccato dagli incidenti e traversie della vita. L’edificio chiesa rimane ancora il Sancta Sanctorum, il luogo dove vengo per stare bene, per sentire la Caritas [amore per i fratelli] da vicino, per dare Caritas indietro… ma non sempre l’edificio e l’elemento umano si unificano nel trasmettere Caritas e pace divina.

L’omelia di un vescovo non mi ha riscaldato il cuore questo Natale, come avevano fatto altre omelie, di ufficianti meno importanti ma più attenti al cuore e allo spirito del loro gregge, pronti a dare amore, il loro e quello di Dio. Pare che Sua Eccellenza l’ abbia dimenticato: che il Natale è la Festa dell’Amore e della gioia di noi figli esultanti all’evento che è l’inizio del nostro essere cristiani, che culminerà nell’apoteosi della Santa Pasqua di Resurrezione, dove si compie la nostra Redenzione – e quella degli uomini di buona volontà. Mi sono mancate le parole di amore, di conforto di sostegno morale e spirituale che hanno sempre caratterizzato il Natale; non ho sentito accoglienza, fratellanza, Caritas nel suo indirizzo ai fedeli raccolti intono a lui, egli fratello di ognuno di noi, uomo fra gli uomini, peccatore fra i peccatori, figlio di Dio fra i figli di Dio.

Invece, nel consesso, noi eravamo peccatori, l’officiante al di là del consesso, primus inter pares anche nel suo essere uomo, non uno di noi, esente da peccato, il giusto [sic], che (alla fine) sgridava noi peccatori per la situazione dei senzatetto, come se egli conoscesse la situazione di ogni fedele presente, tutti colpevoli a priori di omissione volontaria.

Ma come può un pastore errare così grossolanamente? Sapeva egli quanti disoccupati c’erano nel suo gregge, alla Messa [Mass] quella mattina? Conosceva egli la storia di ognuno di loro; di quanti sacrifici e di quante privazioni era costellata la loro vita? Si rendeva egli conto di quanti già aiutavano il loro prossimo, in modo consono al loro stato e senza mettersi in mostra?

Dignum et justum est che un pastore ci guidi, ci esorti, ci spieghi e ci illumini, ma con esempi e gesti, non solo con parole; che ci faccia sapere che ci sono modi di far volontariato e  che l’aiuto verrebbe apprezzato, senza colpevolizzare o manipolare la coscienza, che non è manipolabile in coloro, e controproducente per coloro che sono a posto davanti a Dio – che degli uomini che si ergono a far le veci di Dio non importa loro poi tanto.

Inoltre, un pastore della Chiesa così colto e intelligente come Sua Eccellenza, sa benissimo che coloro che non fanno e non vogliono fare non cambieranno idea per le sue parole di accusa. Infatti, la tragica situazione dei derelitti del mondo non riposa certamente sulle spalle dei pochi fedeli presenti nella sua chiesa quel Santo Giorno di Natale; piuttosto direi che diventa un discorso così ampio, socialmente e politicamente complesso e non eviscerabile o esauribile in codesta Santa Celebrazione.

Praise of propaganda that supports fabrications about the true state of the world, the hatred and injustice towards few without sober foundations or factual reasons – today’s or yesterday’s – reveals and confirms a millenarian sad and unsettling state of affairs. I thank God that from time to time some competent voices and clear, detached, cogent analyses of what happens and did happen in the remote and not so remote past, raise themselves above the opinionated fabrication, misinterpretations and lies, to bring some of us back to reality and decency in order to understand how deep in deceit and skullduggery we have sunk, in spite of advancements and progress done by the West in all aspects of civilized life.

How self-appointed experts all over, in the West and in the East, let their open hatred loose and end up hanging themselves with the rope of fabricated lies (if the reader is literate and is able to read and write properly, of course). One should read the article on the NYT, which I am not attaching or linking here, Mr. Ostroff mentions to understand the letter fully, though the quotations in the letter are explicit and self-explaining -  the NYT published a rather sad piece!

Your oped “Newt, Mitt, Bibi and Vladimir” in the NY Times of Dec. 13, brings to mind your oped of Nov. 16, 2010 in which you very wisely opined “When widely followed public figures feel free to say anything, without any fact-checking, we have a problem.. Facts, opinions and fabrications just blend together”.

Mr. Gingrich and Palestinian nationhood

It is ironic, that your latest oped epitomizes the objectionable situation you described in 2010 of facts and fabrications blending together. You start by misquoting Mr. Gingrich, claiming he said the Palestinians are not entitled to a state. In fact he neither said nor suggested that. This is what he said in his interview with the Jewish Channel to which you referred. “Remember, there was no Palestine as a state. It was part of the Ottoman Empire. We have invented the Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs and are historically part of the Arab people..”

Moreover, had you checked your facts you would have known that contrary to your claim, Mr. Gingrich actually supports a Palestinian state in a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians as he publicly repeated in a recent veterans’ forum.

Of course there is nothing inconsistent in advocating a state for the Palestinians even though believing them to be, not a separate nation, but part of the great Arab nation sharing a common linguistic, cultural, religious, and historical heritage.

Your statement that Gingrich advocates that Israel is entitled to permanently occupy the West Bank, pursue a road to apartheid, evict the West Bank Palestinians and engage in ethnic cleansing is pure speculation. There is nothing at all in what Gingrich said that remotely resembles these completely illogical and misleading conclusions.

Mr. Gingrich’s views on Palestinian nationhood are supported by the historical fact that when the status of the Ottoman Empire’s former possessions was determined at the San Remo conference in 1920, Syria and Lebanon were mandated to France while Mesopotamia (Iraq) and the southern portion of the territory (Palestine) were mandated to Britain. Jews, Christians and Arabs who lived in the British mandated territory were regarded as Palestinians, not by virtue of nationhood, but by virtue of living in what was then designated as Palestine.

Furthermore, Mr. Gingrich’s views are supported by the authoritative opinion of many Arab personalities who are intimately involved in, and knowledgeable about, Arab affairs. For example, the high profile critic of the Israel government, Arab former member of Knesset Dr. Azmi Bishara expressed views almost identical to those of Mr. Gingrich. During an interview on Israel’s Channel 2 TV he declared “There is no Palestinian nation. It’s a colonial invention… ” . In his current position as director of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Doha and having authored several books in English, German and Arabic he very likely knows more about Palestinian nationhood than you do. He speaks and reads Arabic.

The serious lack of knowledge of Middle East affairs demonstrated in your oped should concern all who are influenced by renowned journalists, whose prestige leads readers to accept their uninformed opinions as facts.

Bibi and the Jewish lobby

Your statement that PM Netanyahu’s standing ovation in Congress was bought and paid for by an Israel lobby is an example of what you described in your 2010 oped as “Facts, opinions and fabrications blending together”. That Netanyahu received a standing ovation is a fact. That the ovation was bought by a sinister Israel lobby of the type propagated by Professors Mearsheimer and Walt is your opinion blended with the inconvenient but undeniable fact.

Since the applause was unanimous, your statement that the members of congress who applauded “were bought and paid” is a terrible slur on the entire US Congress. Have you considered the probability that the applause was a genuine demonstration of approval by intelligent and worthy congressmen and women who think for themselves?

It is a matter of deep concern that a man of your undoubted influence can exhibit a degree of prejudice that ignores the counter influences of opponents of the Netanyahu government like JStreet with its support by billionaire George Soros and the new Israel fund as well as the high probability that any influence that may be exerted by a pro-Israel lobby is far outweighed by the massive petrodollar-funded Arab lobby.

We need look no further than a March 1, 2011 NY Times article “Arab Unrest Puts Their Lobbyists in Uneasy Spot” that refers to “one of the most formidable lobbying forces in town: the elite band of former members of Congress, former diplomats and power brokers who have helped Middle Eastern nations navigate diplomatic waters here on delicate issues like arms deals, terrorism, oil and trade restrictions”

Although one lobbyist admitted “you have to have a strong stomach to work with dictators in Middle Eastern nations with policies that many American find unsavoury”, Washington’s top lobbyists received tens of millions of dollars from Libya, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Yemen, Egypt and other countries in the region. According to federal filings, Middle East rulers pay retainers of $50,000 or more each month to consultants.

The UAE spent $5.3 million in 2009 for lobbying American officials. Morocco spent more than $3 million, Saudi Arabia about $1.5 million and Turkey nearly $1.7 million.

I do not for one moment deny your freedom to express your opinions. I urge you however, to please make it easier for your readers to distinguish between your opinions and the facts. In the above examples, the line between them is very blurred and your clarification will be appreciated.
